The publication of the 1926 Irish census online has sparked widespread public interest, offering a unique glimpse into life a century ago and reconnecting many people with their family histories.

According to Liam Kenny of the Naas Local History Group in Co Kildare, the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The easy availability of the 1926 family forms online has really gripped the Irish public,” he said. “People are getting a great thrill from seeing their forebears’ names written in their own handwriting and learning more about their lifestyles back in the day.”

The newly accessible records allow users to explore household details, occupations and living conditions from 1926, providing valuable insights for both amateur genealogists and experienced researchers.

To support those interested in exploring the census, the Naas Local History Group is hosting a special event titled “Census & Chat.”

The open meeting will take place on Tuesday, 5 May, at 8pm in the Town House Hotel in Naas.

The event aims to guide attendees through the process of accessing and understanding the records, while also offering an opportunity to share discoveries and local knowledge. Organisers say all are welcome, regardless of experience level.
