Drivers of these popular models warned of huge car tax increase from April
by Richard Guttridge, https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/authors/richard-guttridge/ · Birmingham LiveBig road tax changes are coming from April 2025, with millions of drivers being braced to prepare to pay for the first time. Owners of some of the most popular models are being reminded to be ready for the changes so they are not caught out when told they must pay up.
Owners of electric vehicles (EV) will have to pay road tax for the first time from April. Up to now, they have been exempt from car tax with owners being able to enjoy this perk. But that will all change in 2025.
Owners of electric cars will have to pay the flat £190 rate currently paid by petrol and diesel drivers. This may be frustrating for EV drivers but the Government has decided now is the time to raise tax from electric cars.

Their tax-free status is not something which could have gone on forever. With more and more EVs on the roads every year, the Government faced losing large amounts of tax revenue. Ministers say the change will make the tax system "fair" for all motorists.
The change will impact all EVs, including the best sellers. Those in the UK in 2023 were:
- Tesla Model Y
- MG4 EV
- Audi Q4 e-tron
- Tesla Model 3
- Polestar 2
- Volkswagen ID.3
- Kia Niro Electric
- BMW i4
- Volkswagen ID.4
- SKODA Enyaq iV
The Government said: "From April 1, 2025, drivers of electric and low-emission cars, vans and motorcycles will need to pay vehicle tax in the same way as drivers of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles do. This change will apply to both new and existing vehicles and will ensure all drivers begin to pay a fairer tax contribution.
"Electric and low-emission cars registered between April 1, 2017 and March 31, 2025: You will pay the standard rate. This is £190 for 2024 but is subject to change for 2025."
