Two supermarket own-brand roast potatoes have been crowned better than Aunt Bessie’s in blind taste test – and it’s not Tesco or Asda. Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's shoppers have been urged to ditch the big retailers.

Instead, Which? is urging them to consider Aldi or M&S - after both beat Aunt Bessie's in a taste test and ranking. Which? said of Aldi: "Tying for top place, these good-looking potatoes had a flavour that impressed our testers.

"Three-quarters were fans of the fluffy interior, while two-thirds loved the crispy outsides. An excellent crowd-pleasing choice, Aldi's budget roasties come in large 1kg bags." And it said of M&S: "Nice-looking spuds that hit the spot texture-wise with most of the panel. Three-quarters loved the fluffy insides while a little under two-thirds liked the crispy outsides.

"Flavour was generally praised, too, though a stronger taste would’ve made these potatoes even more popular. These M&S spuds are more expensive than Aldi’s offering, but are around average price compared to the rest of the potatoes we tested."

Aunt Bessie's came third and Morrisons The Best Beef Fat Roast Potatoes came fourth with a rating of 71 per cent. Sainsbury’s Maris Piper Roast Potatoes with Beef Dripping, Taste the Difference came fifth with 71 per cent too.

Tesco Finest Beef Dripping Roast Potatoes was sixth at 71 per cent, ahead of Co-op Irresistible Beef Dripping Roast Potatoes at 70 per cent. Waitrose Frozen Roast Potatoes in Beef Fat was ranked next at 70 per cent.

Asda Extra Special Beef Dripping Roast Potatoes finished second bottom with 68 per cent and the consumer group warned: "Lacklustre compared with other potatoes on test. Tasters felt the outsides lacked crispiness, and nearly half wanted a stronger flavour."

McCain Triple Cooked Roasts wrapped up the ranking in the final position.
