'Never repeated' £1m home with landmark windmill up for sale - and it's the talk of the town

The Wednesbury property took more than 25 years to build and is full of reclaimed features lovingly saved from schools, factories and churches

It is the landmark Midland home that everyone knows - but no-one has seen inside. Known by locals in Wednesbury as the "windmill house", it took its owners a quarter-of-a-century to finish it with materials salvaged from doomed buildings across the region.

And while the windmill - an usual feature in the Black Country - made for an eye-catching sight at the highest point in the town, the unique interior was publicly revealed for the first time after the Round House went up for sale priced at more than £1 million.

Covering more than an acre, it has three bedrooms, an open plan lounge and dining area with an indoor swimming pool. It also includes the famous windmill, tennis court and separate one bedroom lodge. It is the talk of the town after a 'coming soon' sales video went viral on Facebook.

Owner Matthew Humphries said he decided to sell the house after the death of his parents, David and Elizabeth Humphries, who were part of four generations to run the Humphries demolition business since 1919. He said: "My parents were demolition contractors who spent 40 years taking down old houses, schools, factories, and a few churches across the West Midlands.

"From the schools they saved oak gym floors, from the old houses decorative brickwork, from the factories huge steel joists, and from the churches cast iron pillars and pieces of stone so heavy it took a crane to lift them.

"They then set about designing a dream home with those saved materials in mind, and the end result is a property so unique it can never be repeated.

"Construction began in the 1980's and slowly progressed as my parents found the reclaimed materials they needed from one demolition project to the next. My brother and I spent our weekends growing up helping my father lay the ground work, cleaning all the wooden flooring by hand, chipping mortar off reclaimed bricks, and transporting stone by the lorry load.

"And 26 years later, the Round House was finally finished complete with a second smaller home for my grandfather to live in and a windmill in the back garden for good measure."

Listing agent Charlotte Williams & Matthew Lowe said the property received a lot of interest after the 'coming soon' video was shared on social media. They said: "We received a lot of interest after the video, which received over 50,000 views on our Facebook page.

"The windmill can be seen from the base of the town. Everyone you speak to about the property says 'oh it’s the windmill house', They say they’ve seen the windmill but never knew what was there. There’s a lot of buzz around that at the moment.

"The swimming pool is the central hub of the property, It leads to all rooms in the house going completely around."

Matthew said: "What can't easily be conveyed without visiting the property is how peaceful it is there. Once the gates close you could be anywhere in the UK.

"As you walk around you'll notice the little details, the Latin emblem from Hilltop School above the gates, the stone heads in the garden saved from churches, and the beautiful decorative window frames on the annexe tower to name but a few."
