Roadside waste disrupts life at Hyderabad’s Shahinyathgunj
Residents and shopkeepers said the problem could be addressed by placing large garbage collection bins at suitable locations along the road.
by Mir Alamgir · The Siasat DailyHyderabad: The accumulation of garbage along the Bedarwadi Road in Shahinyathgunj is causing considerable inconvenience to local residents, shopkeepers and motorists. Despite the regular presence of GHMC sanitation workers, the garbage remains scattered on the road for most of the day and is cleared only in the morning.
The heaps of waste, including household refuse and other discarded material, have become a major source of concern for people living and working in the locality. The foul smell and unhygienic conditions are making it difficult for shopkeepers to conduct their business, while residents fear that the accumulated waste could lead to the spread of infections.
Lakhan Singh, a local mechanic, said the garbage scattered along the roadside was causing serious problems for people working in the area. “We have to put up with the foul smell throughout the day. Customers visiting our shops are also inconvenienced. Though GHMC workers clear the garbage in the morning, fresh waste starts accumulating soon afterwards,” he said.
Rupesh Agarwal, a local businessman, said the situation was particularly bad during the evening and night. Stray dogs rummage through the garbage, scattering it further across the road and creating difficulties for pedestrians and motorists. The presence of flies has also become a major nuisance for nearby commercial establishments.
Mohd Qamar, a local resident, said children in the neighbourhood were frequently falling ill amid the unhygienic surroundings. “There are flies everywhere, and the garbage remains exposed for most of the day. It is a serious health concern, particularly for children and elderly people,” he said.
Residents and shopkeepers said the problem could be addressed by placing large garbage collection bins at suitable locations along the road. They urged the GHMC to provide adequate bins and ensure regular waste collection throughout the day instead of relying on a single morning clearance. They also appealed to the civic body to take steps to prevent roadside dumping and maintain cleanliness in the locality.
