Letter to the editor: Government, live within your means like the rest of us

· The Washington Times

OPINION:

My greatest fear is that without some fundamental changes, our country is headed toward bankruptcy within 50 years.

Our federal budget is equivalent to someone making $30,000 a year, spending $40,000 a year and paying $6,000 in interest on their credit card debt. It is not sustainable.

You can’t fix a $40 trillion debt when you have a Federal Reserve Board accountable to almost no one, slowing down the economy whenever it wants. Handing our economy over to the Federal Reserve was a mistake. No one on it has ever been laid off due to the bank’s “cooling down” of the economy with interest rate hikes. Well, I have.

This is lazy policy. Congress, get off your butts and fix costs the way egg prices were fixed. Do the hard work. The economy will not overheat. Prices only go up when there’s not enough competition.

We also won’t fix the debt with so many voters getting sucked into the Democratic Socialists of America’s ’Where’s my free stuff?’ movement. The new definition of insanity is trying socialism over and over again and expecting a different result.

In fact, that socialism is a failed system is page 38 of my macroeconomics textbook. It’s a true-or-false test question. You also stop ballooning debt when so many voters can’t figure out why there are only two teams on the field. One wants more government and the other wants less; pick one.

Government must learn to live within its means like everyone else.
