Tragic House Fire Claims Life in Southeast Houston

A deadly house fire broke out Monday night in southeast Houston.

Firefighters arrived shortly after 10 p.m. to find flames pouring from the front of the home. During their search, they discovered a victim, believed to be a man, in one of the bedrooms. No one else was in the house, and no additional injuries were reported, according to the Houston Fire Department (HFD).

Two fire crews quickly entered the home, containing the fire within minutes.

Deputy Chief John Douglas said, “It looks like the fire started in the bedroom where the victim was located, from what we can see from the exterior.” The HFD Arson Division is now investigating to determine the exact cause and origin of the fire.

With colder weather on the way, Douglas emphasized the importance of safe space heater usage, as they can be a common cause of fires during winter.

Space Heater Safety Tips

To keep your home safe during the colder months, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends these tips:

  • Keep a safe distance: Ensure that anything flammable, such as furniture, bedding, or curtains, is at least three feet away from space heaters, fireplaces, or furnaces.
  • Never use your oven: It’s dangerous to use an oven to heat your home.
  • Annual inspections: Have your heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified professional.
  • Test smoke alarms: Check them monthly to ensure they’re working.

Stay cautious to prevent future tragedies this holiday season.
