Dasher Diary: The $27 “Dream Order” That Almost Went South
· NewsTalk 1290When it comes to delivering in Amarillo, things can change. You can start one day with a lot of bad orders, to the point where you want to give up. You could also have the best day ever. You never really know until you get out there.
The one thing about this side gig is that things can always change. You should know that when you accept an offer for a certain amount of money, that amount can change, too. It could still go up or down. Never count on anything until the delivery is done.
You can receive a double-stacked order. That is when you pick up and deliver to two different customers. It’s also considered a 'double' if you pick up from two separate locations for a single delivery address.
The Magic of the Double-Stack: High Risk, High Reward
The problem is sometimes an order gets cancelled because a restaurant is out of something, or sometimes one of the customers just cancels the order for no reason. Again, never count on having two deliveries until you pick them both up and drop both off. It just saves heartache.
Sometimes you receive a magical order, and you are in fear of losing it. That is what happened to me recently. I received a double order, picking up from two different restaurants and delivering to two different customers.
The order was supposed to pay me $27.60 to drive just under seven miles. It should only take me about thirty minutes, so this was a dream. Again, things could change. They may not, but always know that it is a possibility.
Red Alert: Handling the Mid-Route Address Change
I picked up the first order and was on the way to the second restaurant when my phone rang. My initial reaction was worry because it was one of my customers. The other shoe could drop at any moment, and I could lose one of these deliveries depending on what they needed.
The customer called me in a panic because they had the wrong address in the app. She had her work address, but she was at home. So I let her know that she would have to contact DoorDash to change her address.

Support usually lets you finish the delivery if you agree to the new distance, depending on how far the new address is. So I asked her the new address and found out it was only a mile or so up the road.
DoorDash was not going to cancel this order on me. I was very happy about that. I was also happy that this was a legitimate order because sometimes, when this happens, a customer is trying to scam the driver or DoorDash. Luckily, this turned out not to be the case.
Once I got her food picked up, I messaged her to make sure she made the address change, and she had. The app had just updated with the new directions to her house. I dropped off both offers and confirmed the deliveries.
The Payoff: Why Great Tips Make Up for the Bad Days
They both tipped and tipped very well. One was a $15 tip, and the other was $10. This is not the norm when it comes to payment, but I will take my wins when I can.
Both customers received their food and were happy, as I ended up with a very nice payoff. I love it when days like this happen; it makes up for some of those bad ones.
