Texas Gas Prices Drop Again as Drivers Get Some Relief

· NewsTalk 1290

Any type of financial relief we can get these days is welcome. Over six weeks, we saw gas prices climb, and some prices even breached the $4 mark. However, in most of Texas, we were lucky enough that gas prices stayed under that mark. Now we are seeing prices drop for the second straight week. We can only hope the downward trend continues until prices fall back below $3.

How Texas Gas Prices Compare to the National Average

It is quite nice to pull up to the pump and see prices drop instead of rise. According to AAA Texas, the average price of a gallon of regular gas is $3.60. That is a 14-cent drop from last week. However, we are 85 cents higher than we were last year at this time.  The national average is $4.03 per gallon, which is down 6 cents.

City-by-City Gas Prices Across Texas This Week

Looking at some of the individual cities in Texas, Lubbock is once again the city paying the cheapest gas prices in the state.

  • Amarillo: $3.34 - down 4 cents from last week
  • Lubbock: $3.30 - down 8 cents from last week
  • Midland: $3.56 - down 9 cents from last week
  • Tyler: $3.53 - down 14 cents from last week
  • El Paso: $3.80 - down 17 cents from last week

El Paso still has the highest gas prices in the state.

Why Gas Prices Are Still Dropping Despite High Crude Oil Costs

Gas prices are still falling even as crude oil remains elevated. Brent crude is above $101, and West Texas Intermediate is near $93. The EIA reported that gasoline inventories dropped by 4.6 million barrels.

What Could Send Gas Prices Back Up

Supply and demand will still help determine the price of gas.

According to Daniel Armbruster with AAA Texas, "oil markets are still reacting to events overseas, and any new disruption involving global crude supply could affect what drivers pay in the weeks ahead.”
