Households in the Netherlands hold 3.2 billion in crypto, Dutch Central Bank says

Dutch households held 3.2 billion euros in cryptocurrency through domestic service providers at the end of this June, according to the figures published for the first time by the Dutch Central Bank, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB). This, in turn, accounts for roughly 1.4 percent of their total investment in bonds, shares, and investment funds.

Most of the crypto-assets held by households were bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies that are not linked to the value of traditional assets, such as the U.S. dollar or gold. Bitcoin and Ethereum specifically accounted for the largest share of those holdings.

Bitcoin accounted for 1.5 billion euros of household crypto holdings, while Ethereum represented 300 million euros, the DNB said. Stablecoins, which are designed to maintain a relatively stable value, as the name suggests, made up less than one percent of the total. By comparison, Dutch households held 234,2 billion euros listed in shares, bonds, and investment funds at the end of June.

Businesses and other sectors held another 200 million euros in crypto-assets. That brought the total to 3.4 billion euros at the end of the second quarter.

The figures cover crypto-assets held through Dutch service providers, including platforms that facilitate trading. They do, however, exclude crypto assets held through foreign providers or stored directly in personal digital wallets. Their calculations also excluded indirect cryptocurrency investments previously reported by the DNB.

DNB publishes statistics on the Dutch financial sector and the country’s financial transactions with the rest of the world. The data, in turn, helps policymakers and researchers track the country’s economic developments.
