Dutch Bitcoin company Bitonic hacked; Cryptocurrency of 3 clients stolen

Dutch bitcoin company Bitonic has suffered a hack that led to the theft of bitcoin from three customer accounts. The company described the amount stolen as “small” and said all three customers have been fully reimbursed. Login details were also changed for other accounts.

“The attacker was able to change data in our systems, including the login credentials of multiple accounts. At this time, we cannot rule out the possibility that the attacker also accessed the personal data of other customers. Based on what we know so far, that does not appear to be the case, but our investigation is still ongoing,” the company said.

The breach was discovered on Sunday evening, when Bitonic found that hackers had exploited “a vulnerability” to access part of its systems. The company took the affected systems offline immediately as a precautionary measure. Bitonic said it has since fixed the security flaw and fully restored the systems.

Bitonic, which is based in Amsterdam, said it had informed the affected customers and fully reimbursed them for their stolen bitcoin. “We will continue conducting a thorough technical investigation into the cause and extent of the incident. We are taking additional measures to prevent a recurrence and will notify the relevant regulators,” the bitcoin platform said.

Bitonic is also urging customers to review their password security. The company recommends changing their Bitonic password through the app or website as a precaution, particularly if they have reused it on other platforms or chosen a weak password.
