At least five injured, two seriously, in separate Nijmegen and Wekerom crashes
Several people were injured, including at least two seriously, in two separate car crashes Saturday evening in Wekerom and Nijmegen, according to emergency responders.
In Wekerom, multiple people were injured when a car collided with a tree along the Vijfsprongweg at about 9:40 p.m. At least one victim is believed to have suffered serious injuries. The 112 reporter from Omroep Gelderland said that the vehicle contained four individuals, three of whom sustained injuries.
The car struck the tree at high speed and came to rest in a ditch. After the crash, the engine block dislodged, causing the vehicle to catch fire.
Emergency responders, including the fire brigade, two ambulances, and a trauma helicopter, were deployed. The road was temporarily closed due to the severity of the crash.
In a separate crash in Nijmegen, two people were injured in a serious collision on the A73 near the Neerbosch junction toward Beuningen. One victim was in critical condition and was taken by ambulance to Radboudumc for urgent treatment, according to Omroep Gelderland's 112 reporter.
The crash occurred at a curve, where a car is believed to have struck a guardrail, veered onto the shoulder, and overturned. Two wheels were torn off the vehicle, and debris was scattered across the road.
Emergency crews, including the Nijmegen fire brigade, two ambulances, and multiple police units, responded. Both victims were taken to the hospital, one under emergency conditions. A trauma helicopter was dispatched but later canceled. The highway remained closed early Sunday due to investigation and recovery work.
