Dutch consumer confidence is slightly less negative in September

Consumer confidence improved slightly in September, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). The indicator rose from -34 in August to -33 in September. The assessment of the economy deteriorated, while willingness to buy improved. The figure remains well below the 20-year average of -12. The willingness to buy indicator rose from -19 in August to -17 in September.

CBS asks people every month about their view on the state of the Dutch economy, as well as whether they think now is a good time for a big purchase. The respondents are also asked about their own financial situation. Together, the answers to these questions form the consumer confidence indicator, which ranges from -100 to +100.

Compared with August, the assessment of the economy in September is a fraction more negative, the CBS reported. The component indicator for the economic climate fell from -57 to -58. Just like the consumers have been negative about the economy in the past twelve months, CBS reports, they are also expected to remain negative in the upcoming 10 months.

The highest level of consumer confidence since the emasurments began was recorded in January 2000 at +36. The lowest, -59, was seen in September and October 2022.

People were also found to be feeling more positive about their own financial situation in the upcoming 12 months. Over the 12-month mark, it will likely stay the same. Consumers also felt better about making a large purchase in September than in August.
