Inside dramatic multi-million pound Peak District mansion with 'wealth of character'

by · Derbyshire Live

A stunning and remote mansion in the Peak District, offering a sense of real class, has been listed on the property market.

Eyam House, aptly named due to its close proximity with the infamous 'plague village', was first referenced in the 1842 edition of William Wood’s History and Antiquities of Eyam, and still retains a "wealth of character" according to estate agent Blenheim.

The Grade II-listed property has eight bedrooms and sits on a huge 26-acre plot of land, comprising formal gardens and "lush" parkland.

Each room is immaculately designed and wouldn't look out of place in a stately home or a BBC drama.

And it has ties to Chatsworth itself, with Blenheim writing: "It is believed that the 6th Duke of Devonshire’s head gamekeeper, Thomas Burgoine, constructed the home, cottage and farm buildings.

"Thomas’ relationship with the Duke is thought to have been close due to a portrait being commissioned of the Duke, Mr Beaumont and Thomas on a shoot at Chatsworth.

"First listed by Historic England in 1984, Eyam House showcases many original features such as stone and cast iron fireplaces, staircase balustrades, sash windows with wooden shutters and two stone pillars to the main entrance, which set the tone for this extraordinary residence."

The formal dining room is a key feature of the home, featuring 400-year-old oak wainscot panelling and ample space for a large gathering.

A spokesperson for Blenheim added: "The grounds of Eyam House extend considerable acreage and contain approximately 15.8 acres of outstanding parkland, which has tree-lined borders and is fully enclosed by dry stone walling.

"A further eight acres incorporates grazing land. To one side of the home is a stone flagged patio, a walled courtyard with a detached stone barn and wood store, and a lawned kitchen garden with a stone-built, glazed greenhouse and an attached store room."

The property, which lies in Foolow Road in Eyam, is listed with a guide £3,500,000 guide price.
