MPs propose lower penalties for late traffic fine payments
The PRO and CDA parties want to reduce the penalties for people who fail to pay traffic fines on time. Under the current rules, the amount can rise to three times the original fine. Members of Parliament Fatihya Abdi (PRO) and Jeltje Straatman (CDA) are proposing to halve the increases. The two MPs outlined longstanding criticism of the fine system in an initiative paper, arguing that increases in traffic fines have been driven by government budget shortfalls rather than road safety concerns. They also say traffic fines have risen more sharply than penalties under criminal law.
