It's the film that is on everyone's screens over the Christmas period.

But what many Home Alone fans won't know, is that the movie was actually filmed in a school gymnasium - and not the famous house we all thought.

The 1990 classic tells the story eight-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) fending off robbers after being left home alone while his family holiday in Paris.

Fans were stunned to learn that the iconic house in Chicago was only used for exterior shots in the movie.

What looked like scenes from the inside of the mansion was really a manmade house built inside the gym at New Trier Township High School.

In a resurfaced interview, Home Alone's executive producer, Scott Rosenfelt, shared: 'We built all the sets in the school so it was a beautifully built, structurally built two floors so you could walk up steps.

'The front door, we shot here. The school turned into a backlot.'

Anther filmmaker added: 'It was far to small to get the crew in the house so it was obvious, we needed a proper set. We just didn't have great sound stages in Chicago.'

Fans wrote on X: 'Remember that the Home Alone home wasn't used for any indoor shots. However, they are said to have faithfully recreated the dimensions inside a High School gym',

'The whole movie was shot on a set. That house was only used for exterior shots',

'I did not know that. Make sense now that they explained it, but it’s interesting how I never even wondered about it',

'Wow, in a school gymnasium? That’s crazy but obviously worked',

And as the film marks its 35th anniversary since release, the festive classic has  officially been crowned the UK's favourite Christmas movie.

It comes after Home Alone star Macaulay riled up the crowd at an event earlier this month when he also proclaimed that the Die Hard is not a Christmas movie.

The 45-year-old actor waded into the controversial debate at 'A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin' event, celebrating the 35th anniversary of his iconic holiday movie, at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center in California.

He was booed by the crowd after stating that classic 1988 action thriller Die Hard, which begins on Christmas Eve, 'isn't a Christmas movie', according to People.

After hearing boos from the audience, he responded: 'I know. Some of you guys want to fight me, I’ll meet you at the loading dock, but it's just a movie that’s set at Christmas.'

'If you set it at St. Patrick's Day, the exact same movie. But you set Home Alone at St. Patrick's Day...' he added.
