James Cameron Calls Out Amy Poehler’s ‘Ignorant’ Comedy -- Says Joke About His Past Marriage ‘Went Too Far’
by Perez Hilton · Perez HiltonJames Cameron has a bone to pick with Amy Poehler.
The Avatar: Fire and Ash director recently got candid about his disdain for the Parks and Recreation actress’ “ignorant” humor — 12 years after she fired off a searing joke at his expense! Earlier this month, James sounded off to The New York Times about a joke Amy made more than a decade ago at the 2013 Golden Globes. In case you don’t recall, Amy hosted the ceremony with pal Tina Fey that year. And during a monologue poking and prodding at some of the nominees, which included James’ ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow for Zero Dark Thirty, the Inside Out voice actress joked:
“When it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.”
Ouch! Ha!
James and Kathyrn were married from 1989 to 1991, but have remained amicable in the years since. They even went toe-to-toe at the 2010 Academy Awards, where James’ Avatar was nominated in the same category for Best Director against Kathryn’s The Hurt Locker — which she ended up winning! But James wasn’t upset. He told the NYT:
“I was the first one on my feet applauding.”
So three years later at the Golden Globes, he felt Amy’s joke was totally uncalled for and NOT a reflection of his and Kathryn’s dynamic:
“Amy Poehler’s remark was an ignorant dig, at an event which is supposed to be a celebration of cinema and filmmakers, not a roast. I’m pretty thick-skinned, and happy to be the butt of a good-natured joke, but that went too far.”
Yikes. He continued:
“The fact that people found it funny shows exactly what they think of me, even though they have no idea who I am or how I work.”
Uh oh! It sounds like Amy’s joke really struck a nerve with James. But he should remember that it was genuinely made in good fun — and clearly people think VERY highly of him despite laughing at the joke… we mean, he’s responsible for three of the top five highest grossing movies ever, including Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Titanic!
But we guess time does NOT heal all wounds!
