Five NAF personnel, 14 others perish in road crash

The Nigerian Air Force has announced the loss of five personnel who were involved in a road traffic accident on Tuesday around Hawan Kibo, along the Jos-Akwanga Expressway, while the Federal Road Safety Corps said 14 others also died in the crash.

For the NAF, the Director, Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Olusola Akinboyewa, confirmed the accident.

Akinboyewa said on Tuesday that the personnel were heading for a sporting event in Abuja when their vehicle was involved in a collision with an oncoming truck.

He said: “Consequently, statutory administrative protocols applicable in circumstances as this have been activated by the NAF to provide comfort and succour to the bereaved families.

“We appeal to the public to respect the privacy of the victims’ families during this difficult time and to refrain from sharing unverified details.

The FRSC said the accident occurred as an 18-passenger Hiace bus travelling from Yola, the Adamawa State capital, through Jos, the Plateau State capital, to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja ran into a stationary articulated vehicle on the highway, leading to the death of the driver and all the 18 passengers.

The spokesman of the Plateau state Command of the FRSC, Peter Yakubu, confirmed the death of the victims.

Yakubu blamed the accident on brake failure.

He said: ‘‘No one survived the accident. 

“The sole person taken to the hospital later succumbed. 

“Eighteen died at the scene, while one died at the hospital. 

“The whole thing was caused by brake failure. 

“It is rather unfortunate.”
