At what age should a child own a phone?, by Omonkhomion Goodness Matilda
by Hassan Muaz · The Eagle OnlineThis 21st century has made students lazy enough not to do their assignments themselves. They abuse the use of AI applications which is really affecting them in their studies. These days, many students find it difficult to study what they are being taught because of the exposure to the social media which is wrongly used.
In our digital age, we see how toddlers navigate touch screen without guide, knowing the appropriate age a child should own a phone is one of the toughest things in parenting.
Our modern parents should hand over a child first phone when the child demonstrates the maturity and responsibility to handle the digital world, which in most cases between the age gap of 12 and14 years old.
The internet has caused pressure in the lives of the teen
children, making them to feel they are not trying or meeting expectations. Many youth now soil their hands in blood all for money to come online and impress the media.
Many young men feel they are not trying enough, so they even go as far as taking their lives as a result of depression. Social media needs to be regulated to enable a safe media community.
Kids now watch adult content indirectly in the name of skit. Most young adults now post fake luxury lifestyles just to impress the media space.
Many kids get distracted by what is happening; they stop reading their books and focusing on education. All they say is “school na scam”. They forget that without education they can’t count for positivity.

I urge the federal government to please regulate the use of social media to enable a safe and sound community because the youth tend to live the lifestyle they see on social media, not knowing all the lifestyle is fake.
Federal government should please try and regulate the social media space because most people use social media to promote pornographic content and it’s so unhealthy to the society most people go as far as promoting fraud, crimes and voodoo contents so to make the youth become desperate for wealth.Social media in Nigeria needs to be highly regulated.
In conclusion, while phones and social media offer many benefits, children should only own phones when they are mature enough to use them responsibly. Parents, educators, and government authorities must work together to ensure that technology serves as a tool for learning and development rather than a source of distraction and harm.
