MD School, New Oko-Oba, Lagos, has honoured the late publisher of The Eagle Online and former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), Dotun Oladipo, with a posthumous award as the institution celebrated its 40th anniversary.

The anniversary celebration, held in Lagos over the weekend, brought together current pupils, alumni, parents and dignitaries from different professional backgrounds, including government.

The colourful event featured praise and worship, prayers, a sermon and cultural displays, while 25 of the school’s longest-serving teachers and staff members received awards and gifts in recognition of their contributions to the institution.

A major highlight was the recognition of Mrs Olusola Akaiso, the school’s longest-serving teacher, who rose through the ranks to become Head of School.

Akaiso emerged as the leading award recipient, receiving a plot of land alongside other prizes for her dedication and service to the institution.

Another staff member, Mr James Ugwunali, who had previously received a plot of land, was also rewarded with a cash prize to support the completion of his building.

The ceremony also featured a posthumous award to Oladipo in recognition of his contributions to the school and his longstanding relationship with the institution.

Speaking during the event, the school’s Executive Director, Mrs Omolara Adedugbe, described the late publisher as a dependable partner who played an active role in the development of MD School.

She recalled his involvement in previous anniversary celebrations and said he had been looking forward to the 40th anniversary before his death.

“Dotun was with us when we celebrated both 20 and 30 years and played an active role.

“Even this year he was gearing up for this celebration when he succumbed to the cold hands of death,” she said, while praying for the repose of his soul.

Adedugbe expressed gratitude for the school’s growth over the past four decades, attributing its achievements to God’s grace and the support of people around her, particularly her family and late husband, whom she credited with standing firmly behind her vision.

She said: “When God beckons and gives you an assignment, he does so in several ways.

“When you truly hear him, and heed his call, he empowers you and ensures he alone takes the glory because he never leaves nor forsakes you, even when the journey becomes tough.”

The executive director disclosed that MD School was established following an idea she developed with her husband in response to a need identified through his clinic in Ibadan.

She recalled that the idea developed into a vision that was “tenaciously pursued and jealously guarded from Inception,” and “has now become a legacy by the special grace of God.”

Adedugbe also paid tribute to past and present members of staff, describing their contributions as central to the institution’s development.

She referred to them as “heroes of our story, no vision succeeds without enablers.”

“MD School has been propelled to where it is today because of the efforts of people who contributed in one way or the other, and that is growth through people,” she declared.

Among the dignitaries at the anniversary celebration were Chief Akin Olujimi, a former Attorney-General of the Federation, who chaired the occasion, and Dr Suleiman Ogunmuyiwa, Director of the Office of Quality Assurance, Lagos State Ministry of Education, who attended as Special Guest of Honour.

Also present was the traditional ruler of Ijebu-Ijesha, Oba Moses Oluwafemi Agunsoye, alongside other notable personalities.
