Just In: GOCOP announces Dotun Oladipo Prize For Online Journalism
by Ayomide Erhabor · The Eagle OnlineThe Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) has announced its intention to institute the Dotun Oladipo Prize for Online Journalism, in memory of the Guild’s immediate past president and founder of The Eagle Online, who died on August 25, 2026, at age 56.
GOCOP Deputy President, Olumide Iyanda, spoke on behalf of the association at a service of songs held in honour of the late veteran journalist, Dotun Oladipo.
He thanked Oladipo’s family, for the years they had shared him with the Guild, his friends and colleagues.
According to him, the time Dotun Oladipo gave to GOCOP and so many others was also time that belonged to them.
Iyanda said the Guild had been reflecting on how best to preserve Oladipo’s legacy.
“I therefore wish to announce, on behalf of our President, the Executive Committee and the entire membership of GOCOP, our intention to institute the Dotun Oladipo Prize for Online Journalism,” he said.
“The prize will recognise outstanding online journalism in Nigeria and keep alive the values Dotun represented as a journalist, publisher and leader.

“The details will be worked out by the Guild in due course.”
Oladipo, who served two terms as GOCOP president before becoming the Guild’s President Emeritus, founded The Eagle Online under Premium Eagle Media Limited after a career as Political Editor at The Punch.
Closing his remarks, Iyanda said: “We cannot replace him. We can only remember him and try to be there for others the way he was there for us.
“Dotun cared a lot, and he carried a lot — sometimes too much. We will miss our President Emeritus terribly.”
