Social Media: Learning tool or distraction?, by Angel Egharevba Osaretin

Social media has become a part of everyday life, especially among young people in higher institutions. Platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X are no longer used only for chatting and entertainment. They have become places where people share information, learn new skills, and connect with others.

However, many people still debate whether social media is helping learners gain knowledge or distracting them from their studies.

On one hand, social media has made learning easier and more accessible. Undergraduates can join academic groups, watch educational videos, download study materials, and interact with classmates and lecturers online. If a class is cancelled or the schedule changes, such as moving from 9am to 11am, important updates can quickly reach everyone through WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms. This improves communication and ensures that useful information is received on time. During examinations, many learners use online groups to discuss topics and share academic resources. Social media has also given young people access to knowledge beyond the classroom.

In addition, many undergraduates have learned valuable skills through social media. Some have mastered graphic design, photography, video editing, content creation, and digital marketing simply by watching tutorials online. Others use these platforms to promote their businesses and earn extra income while studying. Many individuals also find tutorials related to handwork, crafts, and practical skills that may benefit them in school or future careers. Social media encourages reading by providing information about books and educational resources. Many useful learning applications can also be downloaded from the Play Store or App Store to support academic growth and personal development.

Social media also has a positive impact on daily life and health awareness. Many health professionals and organisations share information about healthy eating, exercise, mental health, and simple wellness tips online. People can learn about balanced diets, the importance of drinking enough water, regular exercise, and maintaining good hygiene. These tips help individuals make healthier choices in their everyday lives.

Another important benefit of social media is the rapid spread of news and information. People can stay informed about what is happening around them, in their communities, and across the world. News updates, weather alerts, public announcements, and emergency information can be shared quickly through social media platforms. This helps users remain aware of current events and important developments.

Social media also influences fashion and lifestyle. University students can discover fashion tips, style ideas, and advice on dressing appropriately for different occasions. Many creators share tutorials and recommendations that help young people improve their appearance and confidence while expressing their personal style.

Despite these benefits, social media can also be a major distraction. Many teenagers and young adults spend hours scrolling through videos, reading comments, or following trends when they should be studying. What begins as a quick check of notifications can easily turn into hours of wasted time. As a result, assignments are delayed, reading time is reduced, and concentration becomes difficult.

Another concern is that social media can affect academic performance. Constant notifications often interrupt study sessions and make it harder to focus. Some learners have developed a habit of checking their phones every few minutes, making it difficult to complete important tasks. Excessive use of social media can also lead to poor sleep patterns, which may affect learning and productivity.

In my opinion, social media is not the real problem; how it is used is what matters. Like many other tools, it can be beneficial when used wisely and harmful when abused. People who use social media for learning, networking, health awareness, and personal development can gain a lot from it. However, those who spend most of their time on entertainment may find it becoming a distraction.

In conclusion, social media is both a learning tool and a distraction. It has the power to support education, improve communication, spread news, promote healthy lifestyles, develop skills, and create opportunities. It can also provide fashion advice, tutorials, book recommendations, and access to useful educational applications. However, it can also waste valuable time and reduce academic focus. The responsibility lies with users to find the right balance and use social media in ways that contribute positively to their growth and success.
