Werwulf Trailer: Robert Eggers' New Horror Movie Looks Like The Perfect Nosferatu Companion

Robert Eggers is the Wes Anderson of horror. Like Anderson, he has a distinct style he has no interest in shying away from, a stable of actors he wants to keep working with (bonus: both of those stables include Willem Dafoe), and, at this point, you either love him or hate him. I'm in the former camp: I've been all-in on old Bobby Eggs since "The Witch" arrived and introduced the world to Black Phillip. Since then, I've been on board with all of Eggers' movies (although I'll confess I was a tad mixed on "The Northman").

Back around Christmas 2024, Eggers scored a big hit — his highest grossing film to date — with the genuinely scary fever dream "Nosferatu." Now, he's back to give us another holiday horror release with "Werwulf." The film's latest trailer is here, and, yep, it sure looks like a Robert Eggers movie. (I mean that as a compliment, but your mileage may vary.) Set in the 13th century, "Werwulf" stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as a farmer who turns into a beast, unleashing all sorts of horrors upon those around him. Check out the movie's new trailer above.

Will Robert Eggers score another holiday horror hit with Werwulf?

Robert Eggers isn't pulling his punches with "Werwulf," even going so far as to have all of the dialogue in the film spoken in Middle English. He's also working alongside another first-class cast here, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson joined by his "Nosferatu" co-star Lily-Rose Depp, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie, and, yup, Willem Dafoe. The movie will be dropping in theaters a week after the battle of the blockbusters that's being billed as "Dunesday," with "Avengers: Doomsday" and "Dune: Part Three" going head to head. For my money, though, this December is going to be all about Eggers' werewolf flick, and the latest trailer suggests it might just have what it takes to become another holiday horror success for the filmmaker.

"Werwulf" distributor Focus Features (which previously collaborated with Eggers on "Nosferatu" and "The Northman") certainly seems confident about that. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has already won a bidding war to finance Eggers' next project: a new movie adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic play "Romeo and Juliet." Color me intrigued!

"Werwulf" opens in theaters on December 25, 2026.
