The DC Universe is soldiering on, this time with something completely different. DC Studios' "Clayface" is a horror movie set in Batman's world, with director James Watkins ("Speak No Evil") giving the villain an R-rated origin story in Gotham City. While the Caped Crusader himself isn't present in the film, it's our first meaningful look at Gotham in the new DC Universe. It's also a full-blown body horror flick, adding multiple layers of intrigue. But is this the start of a fresh franchise? Or a one-off experiment?
In the case of comic book movies, post-credits scenes have pretty much become expected fare, so much so that it's frankly more surprising when Marvel or DC doesn't attach a credits scene to one of their movies. But while it appears "Clayface" may prove to be the box office hit that DC needs after "Supergirl," it's seemingly removed from much of what else is going on in the DCU right now. That being the case, fans are probably wondering whether or not they need to stick around after the film's credits begin to roll. We're here to help.
We're offering up a spoiler-free guide in regards to the movie's credits scene situation. Seriously, proceed without fear as we're not going to spoil anything. We're just offering viewers the information they need to have a complete viewing experience without having to wonder whether or not they're missing something important. With that out of the way, let's get to it.
How many credits scenes does Clayface have?
No, there are no credits scenes of any kind attached to "Clayface." No mid-credits scene, no post-credits scene, nothing at all. Once the credits roll, that's it. Director James Watkins says everything he intended to say within the movie itself. So, feel free to make a break for the lobby and/or the bathroom as soon as the credits roll without fear of missing out.
DC Studios co-boss James Gunn has confirmed where "Clayface" takes place on the DCU timeline, and it's one of the earliest projects in the franchise's continuity thus far. That being the case, it sort of makes sense that there are no credits scenes. It's not teeing up a direct sequel, nor does it have any obvious connection to any other title imminently on the way from DC Studios. For now, it's simply a one-and-done. The synopsis for the movie reads as follows:
Matt Hagen's meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss's actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self... but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiraling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.
The "Clayface" cast is led by Tom Rhys Harries ("Suspicion") as Matt Hagen, with Naomi Ackie ("Mickey 17"), David Dencik ("Star City"), Max Minghella ("Industry"), Eddie Marsan ("Ray Donovan"), Nancy Carroll ("The Diplomat"), and Joshua James ("Andor") also starring. Mike Flanagan ("Carrie") and Hossein Amini ("Obi-Wan Kenobi") penned the screenplay, and while Flanagan has said that he's yet to see "Clayface" as of this writing, the film's story did, in fact, originate with him.
"Clayface" hits theaters on October 23, 2026.
