Greek Firefighters Battle 25 Wildfires in 24 Hours

Firefighters responded to 25 agricultural and forest fires across Greece during the past 24 hours, with crews quickly bringing most of the outbreaks under control, according to the Greek Fire Service.

Authorities said firefighters extinguished 22 of the fires in their initial stages, while operations continued at three active incidents.

One of the most significant fires broke out at around 8:30pm on Tuesday in low vegetation near Aspropyrgos, west of Athens.

Fire crews contained the blaze and brought it under partial control within 20 minutes, despite nearby homes and infrastructure posing additional challenges.

The Fire Service deployed 22 firefighters, eight fire engines and one helicopter to tackle the blaze, while water tankers from the Municipality of Aspropyrgos assisted with firefighting operations.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, with the West Attica Arson Crimes Investigation Unit leading the inquiry.

Throughout the incident, the Fire Service’s Operations Coordination Centre monitored the fire in real time using drone footage equipped with both thermal imaging and optical cameras.

The Fire Service also noted that the Aspropyrgos area remains under a Category 3 (High) wildfire risk rating, highlighting the ongoing danger as Greece continues its summer fire season.
