Tatia Starkey, granddaughter of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and daughter of The Who drummer Zak Starkey and his Greek-Cypriot wife Sarah Menikides, is showcasing her artwork at a Surrey gallery, in a solo exhibition exploring love, loss and different expressions of life.

Starkey told BBC Radio Surrey that she wanted to communicate whatever she carried inside herself through her art and “expel it”.

“I’m just trying to share with people the feeling of love, the lack of love, different expressions that we have and the very high points in life,” she said.

Her collection, titled Invert, features canvases that Starkey paints using her body.

James Thompson, owner of Kaizen Fine Art gallery in Bagshot, described Starkey’s work as very different from the art he has exhibited previously.

He called her “wonderful, creative [and] expressive”.

Thompson said Starkey’s famous family connection “definitely helped” when she approached the gallery, explaining that he receives approaches from multiple artists each week.

“I am looking for artists with a name or previous career… that is really exciting to a collector,” he said.

However, Thompson initially rejected the proposal to stage the exhibition, giving it a “straight up” no.

“I then had a closer look at Tatia’s work and actually really liked it,” he said.

Starkey has also worked as a musician but said she wanted to achieve something independently of both her musical career and famous family.

“It would be nice to achieve something alone without a band around me or a family,” she said.

“This feels very much a solo venture. I’d like people to look at the art and take something away from it.”

Starkey is the first grandchild of Ringo Starr. Her father, Zak Starkey, followed his father into music and became the drummer of The Who, while her mother, Sarah Menikides, has Greek-Cypriot heritage.

The Invert collection is on display at Kaizen Fine Art in Bagshot until October 10, with an event celebrating Starkey’s artwork scheduled for Thursday.
