Holy Belt of the Virgin Mary In Thessaloniki for First Time

by · Greek City Times

Large crowds of Orthodox faithful gathered in Thessaloniki on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, to welcome a fragment of the Holy Belt of the Virgin Mary, which arrived in the city for the first time.

The sacred relic travelled from the Holy Monastery of the Virgin Mary of the Holy Belt, under the Metropolis of Samos, and arrived at the Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Thessaloniki at 6pm.

The relic will remain at the church until Wednesday, 11 November, giving worshippers an opportunity to venerate it, pray and seek the protection and intercession of the Virgin Mary.

Local media have reported in recent days that this marks the first time the Holy Belt has visited Thessaloniki.

In an announcement, the Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour described the arrival of the relic as a special blessing for the parish and the wider community.

The church will hold daily religious services throughout the relic’s stay, with organisers set to announce the full programme.

The church will remain open every day from 6am until 12.30am to accommodate pilgrims.

The parish has invited Orthodox Christians from Thessaloniki and surrounding areas to attend the welcoming ceremony and visit the church to receive the blessing of the Virgin Mary.
