92-Year-Old Evia Skipper Bids for Guinness Fishing Record

A 92-year-old fisherman from Evia has applied to Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest working professional fisherman.

Captain Dimitris Polyzosidis left Eretria at 3:30 am on 13 August in his wooden boat, the Grigorios. Three official witnesses stayed on board for the whole trip. He steered the boat, set and hauled nets and longline himself, and was back in port by 10 am with his catch. He then cleaned the nets and reset the longline. The witnesses signed statements that now sit in the Guinness file.

His son, Polyzois Polyzosidis, filed the application. The family is waiting for Guinness to review it.

Polyzosidis has spent most of his life at sea and is still tied to Eretria’s small-boat fishery. He has since had planned surgery and is recovering, so he is off the water and out of public view for now.

The nonprofit ISONOMIA, which documented the attempt, said the family wants the bid to show that island fishermen in Greece often keep working long past retirement age.
