Thessaloniki Mayor Stelios Angeloudis announced plans to create a gastronomy museum on the first floor of the renovated Modiano Market, highlighting the city’s culinary tradition and identity.

The initiative brings together the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the owners of Modiano Market.

According to Angeloudis, the owners have committed to undertaking the entire process to transform the space into a “living museum”.

“The owners have committed and are undertaking the entire process so that this space can be transformed into a living museum,” Angeloudis said.

The Municipality of Thessaloniki will draw on its extensive archive at the Centre for History to provide material for the exhibition. Meanwhile, the city’s UNESCO department will discuss the project in the coming period, having already received a positive initial response, the mayor said.

Angeloudis said he believes Modiano Market can develop into a new landmark for Thessaloniki.

The project aims to create a space that showcases Greece’s long-standing culinary heritage while connecting gastronomy with the city’s cultural identity and its historic market.

“It should be a creative space showcasing a great and enduring cultural asset that our country possesses — its gastronomy — and connect what we all discuss and call the identity of the city with a space of expression around its centre and its market,” Angeloudis said.
