Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Becomes Universal’s Highest-Grossing Film Ever

Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey has made cinematic history, becoming the highest-grossing film ever released by Universal Pictures, with Greece playing a major role in the blockbuster’s production.

The Matt Damon-led film has now earned $1.684 billion worldwide, surpassing Jurassic World, which grossed $1.677 billion following its 2015 release.

In North America, The Odyssey has generated $601.2 million since hitting cinemas on July 17.

The achievement puts Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic at No. 12 on the all-time global box office chart and makes it the third-highest-grossing non-franchise film ever released.

A global hit with Greece at its heart

The film features major scenes shot in Greece, bringing some of the landscapes and locations associated with the ancient epic to a worldwide cinema audience.

Its success has also continued well beyond its opening weeks.

The Odyssey recently returned to the top of the box office during its eighth weekend in cinemas, demonstrating the extraordinary staying power of Nolan’s latest film.

The movie has now also become the highest-grossing R-rated film ever made and the biggest-grossing film in the history of IMAX.

Universal celebrates historic success

The film was produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas through their production company, Syncopy.

Donna Langley, chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment, praised the scale of the achievement and the filmmakers’ vision.

She described the film as one of the most ambitious productions in cinematic history and said it had become a major event for moviegoers.

The record further strengthens Universal Pictures’ extraordinary performance at the global box office in 2026.

The studio has captured around 26% of the worldwide market so far this year, generating almost $5 billion in global ticket sales.

Universal was also the first studio to surpass $4 billion worldwide and $3 billion internationally at the box office this year.

For Greece, the success of The Odyssey represents another major international spotlight on the landscapes, history and mythology that inspired one of the world’s most enduring stories.
