A special moment unfolded at Spartathlon 2026 when Turkish ultramarathon runner Özgür Sancak paid tribute to the statue of King Leonidas in Sparta after completing the gruelling race from Athens.

Sancak took part in the historic ultra-distance race linking Athens with Sparta and followed one of the event’s most recognisable traditions by reaching the statue of the ancient Spartan king at the finish.

After completing the approximately 246-kilometre route, Sancak arrived at the finish exhausted. He then kissed the statue of Leonidas with deep respect, following the traditional ceremony that marks the conclusion of the race.

The gesture carried particular symbolism, with a Turkish athlete paying tribute to one of the most recognisable figures of ancient Greek history.

One of the world’s toughest ultramarathons

Spartathlon ranks among the world’s most demanding ultradistance races, covering approximately 246 kilometres between Athens and Sparta.

The event draws on the ancient journey traditionally associated with the Athenian messenger Pheidippides and has become known for its demanding course, endurance requirements and historic setting.

Sancak’s gesture at the statue of Leonidas captured the spirit of sporting respect and fair play that forms part of the race’s enduring tradition.
