Rome Offers Free Cinema Screenings as Heatwave Refuge

by · Greek City Times

The City of Rome will offer free movie screenings in 11 air-conditioned cinemas as part of a new initiative to help residents escape the summer heat.

Mayor Roberto Gualtieri unveiled the heatwave response plan, which begins on Thursday and runs until August 4.

The initiative, named after the 1983 American film The Big Chill (Il Grande Freddo in Italian), expands the city’s existing network of climate-controlled public spaces where people can seek relief during periods of extreme temperatures.

The programme adds participating cinemas to a network that already includes public libraries and museums equipped with air conditioning.

Gualtieri said the cinemas will screen a selection of quality films, including recent releases, giving residents a comfortable place to stay cool while enjoying free entertainment.

The initiative forms part of Rome’s broader efforts to protect vulnerable residents during increasingly frequent summer heatwaves, which have affected much of southern Europe in recent years.
