The Greek sandal, once everyday footwear in Ancient Greece, is back on city streets and has entered the biggest summer runways in coloured jelly, embellished raffia, funky metallic leather, and controversial barely-there shapes. Once worn on the islands, the same open-foot idea now sits in wardrobes beyond the Mediterranean.
While many people dismiss fashionable footwear as a superfluous, inherently feminine interest, it has served as a mobilizing form of expression and practicality for centuries. Fashion defies time, defines culture, and reflects who we are. This summer, the Greek sandal has made a comeback, becoming one of fashion’s coolest and most versatile shoes. Greece remains at the center of the story.
The Greek Sandal and Its Island Formula
It’s straightforward. For centuries, its formula barely changed: a leather sole, a few straps, and an open foot. It was practical, uncomplicated, and made for a hot climate. Today that silhouette is one of summer fashion’s most popular and stylish staples. The shoe fashion icons are wearing in 2026 comes in jelly, metallic leather, raffia, funky beads, and bright colors. It can sit barely there or carry enough detail to make an outfit. Both are just as trendy.
The Original Greek Sandal was part of daily life in Ancient Greece. Fashion is an interesting intersection of artistic expression and practicality. Ancient Greek footwear was mostly practical. Leather soles sat on the foot, and straps held them in place. While fashion changed, the basic Greek sandal stayed recognizable.
Handmade leather sandals have also stayed part of summer life across Greece for generations. On the islands, they were not a statement. They were the shoes you wore from the beach to dinner, across hot pavements and cobbled streets, and into the evening. They were simple, matching the lifestyle they were designed for.
And then, fashion got involved.
Greek sandal-making became something houses could export, brand, and reinterpret. One name that put the style on the international map was Ancient Greek Sandals. Christina Martini and Nikolas Minoglou founded the label in Greece in 2011. Martini had designed shoes at Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga. Minoglou came from a family footwear business.
The Greek Sandal Gets a 2026 Makeover
The classic brown leather sandal is not disappearing. It is sharing the season with a new generation of Greek-inspired footwear. For summer 2026, collections show jelly finishes, raffia textures, beads, metallic leather, toe-ring details, fisherman shapes, and brighter color combinations. The result feels nostalgic without looking dated. An older leather pair might have come from a cobblestoned Greek island and lasted until it fell apart. The modern version is elevated and can also sit with a dress for dinner in London.
The jelly sandal is the latest and most fashionable update. The translucent shoe recalls the late 1990s and early 2000s. Brands are now selling candy shades, metallics, and clear-toned jelly sandals in their current collections. The toe-strap sandal is another small detail we are seeing much more of. A strap around the big toe completely changes the appearance of the foot, in both heel and flat versions. The knee-high gladiator shoe has also made a strong return since the 2010s, featuring beads, ropes, and fringe to modernize it.

The Greek Sandal on the Street and the Runway
The Greek sandal has moved beyond the islands. Across spring/summer 2026, designers stripped sandals back to exposed toes, thin straps, flat soles, and a barely-there construction. The shape has appeared at Hermès, Tod’s, and The Row, then again at Calvin Klein, Celine, and Jean Paul Gaultier. At Chanel’s Resort 2027 show in Biarritz, Matthieu Blazy sent out controversial, almost-barefoot constructions that left much of the foot exposed. This summer, they’ve appeared in celebrity wardrobes, alongside designer bags and polished tailoring.

The biggest change is range. The older Greek sandal was usually natural leather: tan, brown, or black. Now brands sell the most vibrant and fun colors, plus metallic gold, silver, translucent jelly, and embellished versions. Materials include leather, PVC, raffia, woven textures, beads, and hardware. Styles include flat sandals, chunky fisherman styles, toe-ring silhouettes, jelly flip-flops, clogs, and thin straps. Even with the new variety available, the idea remains the same. The foot stays free.
This year is about expressive personality. Fashion has found new ways to wear the classic leather sandal. It is not leaving. The Ancient Greek sandal remains practical, but now comes in a variety of colors and materials, making it a trendy summer shoe. Thousands of years on, it still keeps us moving.
