West Nile Virus Cases Confirmed in Affluent Athens Suburb

A confirmed case of West Nile virus infection has been recorded in Palaio Faliro, prompting local authorities to activate emergency mosquito-control measures.

The Municipality of Palaio Faliro announced the case following official information from the National Public Health Organization (EODY).

Health authorities immediately activated the required public health protocol. As part of entomological surveillance, the Health Control Directorate of the Southern Sector of the Attica Region installed a special trap to capture adult mosquitoes. The trap will remain in the area for 24 hours.

Emergency spraying on Thursday

The next phase of the response involves targeted spraying by the Municipality of Palaio Faliro on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at 2pm.

Crews will carry out the operation in the wider area around Zaimi Street, covering a radius of 300 metres from the location where the case was identified.

Residents should take additional precautions while the spraying takes place and for at least three hours after the operation ends.

Authorities specifically advise residents to:

  • remain indoors while crews carry out the spraying;
  • keep pets indoors and remove their food and water containers from outdoor areas;
  • avoid hanging clothes outside; and
  • cover or move children’s toys and garden furniture indoors.

Ongoing mosquito-control measures

The Municipality of Palaio Faliro says it operates an organised mosquito-control programme every year.

The programme includes larvicide treatments in all stormwater drains and at the municipal cemetery. Authorities also carry out treatments in the Pikrodafni Stream every two weeks, supplementing the Attica Region’s own interventions. As a result, larvicide treatment takes place in the stream on a weekly basis, according to the municipality.

The municipality has also installed 15 oviposition traps for Aedes albopictus, commonly known as the Asian tiger mosquito, along with five BG traps designed to capture adult mosquitoes.

The relevant authorities will continue monitoring the area. The municipality has urged residents to follow the safety instructions closely during the scheduled spraying operation.
