Archbishop Ieronymos on Mazonakis: ‘He Was a Child of God’

Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece has paid tribute to Giorgos Mazonakis, describing the late singer as a deeply sensitive person with a strong spiritual side and a quiet commitment to helping others.

The Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Ieronymos, has spoken with emotion about the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis, revealing that the two had known each other personally and had shared numerous private conversations away from the public spotlight.

In a statement to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (APE-MPE), Ieronymos described Mazonakis as a man with an “extremely sensitive soul” who possessed special gifts, deep inner reflections and spiritual and existential concerns.

“I had personal acquaintance and contact with Giorgos Mazonakis. We had many meetings and remarkable discussions away from the lights and noise of publicity,” the Archbishop said.

He praised Mazonakis for dedicating more than three decades to Greek music, saying the singer had won audiences across social and cultural divisions through his talent, authenticity and passion.

“Giorgos was a child of God,” Ieronymos said.

“And in the darkness, because all of us are tested by darkness without exception, he always discovered the way out to the Light.”

The Archbishop also highlighted what he described as Mazonakis’ quiet charitable work, saying the singer consistently stood beside people in need without seeking recognition.

“He always stood, anonymously and silently, because that is how he consciously chose, next to our fellow human beings who were in need, without seeking recognition and without turning this need of the other into an occasion for personal promotion,” Ieronymos said.

He described these acts as “invisible acts of true love as a human being.”

Ieronymos said he was deeply shocked by Mazonakis’ sudden death and expressed his solidarity with the singer’s family, friends, collaborators and the thousands of people who loved his music.

“I am shocked by his unjust loss under truly unacceptable circumstances,” he said.

“I join my prayers with the prayers of his family, the people who loved him and his collaborators.”

The Archbishop concluded with a prayer for Mazonakis and those mourning his death.

“I pray that the God of love and mercy, who knows and sees everything, will rest his soul and grant his loved ones strength and comfort.”

“May his memory be eternal.”
