Suzanne Collins Says Greek Myth Inspired The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins has revealed that Ancient Greek mythology played a central role in shaping the bestselling series that became a global publishing and film phenomenon.

Speaking in a rare interview with NPR, republished this week to coincide with the release of Sunrise on the Reaping, Collins said she drew inspiration from the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, as well as the 1960 film Spartacus, reality television and modern war coverage.

Collins explained that the myth of Theseus particularly resonated with her because it tells the story of young Athenians who were sent as tribute to Crete to be sacrificed to the Minotaur.

She said the ancient story provided a powerful framework for exploring themes of oppression, sacrifice and political power, which later became central to The Hunger Games.

Collins also cited the influence of television, recalling how she was channel surfing one evening when images from reality TV programs appeared alongside footage from the Iraq War. The juxtaposition sparked the idea of a dystopian society where entertainment and violence become inseparable.

The original The Hunger Games novel was published in 2008 and became an international bestseller, spawning a blockbuster film franchise starring Jennifer Lawrence. The series has sold tens of millions of copies worldwide and has become one of the defining young adult franchises of the 21st century.

The latest novel, Sunrise on the Reaping, marks the second prequel in the series and revisits the world of Panem decades before the events of the original trilogy.

In the interview, Collins emphasised that the enduring themes found in Ancient Greek mythology continue to offer powerful ways to examine human conflict, political authority and survival.
