Greek-American photographer Dimitri Halkidis will show four works from his series From the Streets to the Runway: ’90s Supermodels in NYC in a Dimitri Halkidis exhibition at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation. Art Number 23 presents the international group show. It opens Saturday, 19 September 2026, from 18:00 to 22:00. The display runs through 1 October. Admission is free.

Four 1991 prints reach Pireos Street

Halkidis shot the pictures in New York City in 1991. The series looks past the official runway. It records unguarded moments around fashion. The Athens selection moves through SoHo and Seventh Avenue. Additionally, it includes backstage at Giorgio di Sant’Angelo. Visitors will see street photographs of Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell. They will also see a backstage portrait of Cindy Crawford and a runway frame. Each work is an archival pigment print from the original 35mm negative.

“Returning to Greece with this work is deeply meaningful,” Halkidis said.

“These photographs were made in the spaces between the official moments, where movement, personality and the life of the city came together. I am honored that they will continue their journey in Athens.”

The presentation follows his June 2026 show of the same series at the Municipal Art Gallery of Mykonos, “Maria Iglessi.” The Athens hang places the pictures in a new international dialogue. It links fashion history, street photography, and cultural memory.

Dimitri Halkidis exhibition venue and hours

The venue stands at Pireos 206, Tavros 177 78. The Michael Cacoyannis Foundation supports theatre, cinema and the visual arts. Its cultural centre has operated since 2009. In 2024 alone, the foundation welcomed close to 300,000 visitors. Art Number 23, founded in London in 2015, regularly stages open-theme group shows there. The current dates match the gallery’s published Athens program: daily viewing from 18:00 to 22:00, 19 September to 1 October.

Halkidis works from original film negatives. He revisits the visual history of New York and Greece. His practice spans fine art, fashion and cultural documentation. His pictures have also appeared in the United States and Greece. Private collections also hold his work.

Why the 1991 New York frames still matter

The early 1990s marked the peak of the original supermodel era. British Vogue’s January 1990 cover by Peter Lindbergh grouped Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Tatjana Patitz. That image helped define the decade. Off-duty street style soon became part of the public record. Vogue later documented how those women dressed between shows in New York.

Giorgio di Sant’Angelo, who died in 1989, remained a reference point into 1991. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a spring/summer 1991 dress from his house. Parsons later exhibited a sequined jumpsuit Naomi Campbell wore in a 1991 editorial. Halkidis photographed the charged minutes around those shows. He waited on sidewalks and backstage rather than on the official catwalk.

Greek institutions have recently given photography a larger stage. Yorgos Lanthimos presented his first major photography exhibition in Greece at Onassis Stegi in March 2026. The Museum of Cycladic Art earlier hosted Cindy Sherman’s first museum show in the country. Halkidis now adds a Greek American fashion archive to that conversation.

What visitors will see

The four selected prints stay close to the city. SoHo streets, Seventh Avenue traffic and Sant’Angelo’s backstage rooms supply the settings. Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell appear in motion on the pavement. Cindy Crawford is shown off the runway. The fourth frame keeps the immediacy of the catwalk itself. All four come from 35mm negatives processed as archival pigment prints.

Art Number 23 groups painters, sculptors, photographers and video artists under an open theme. Halkidis’s fashion documents therefore sit beside other contemporary practices. As a result, the hang connects 1991 New York with 2026 Athens without forcing a single narrative.

The photographer has also spoken, in earlier conversations about the series, of shooting while walking backward on Hudson Street and of asking Naomi Campbell to run for a frame after an Isaac Mizrahi show. Those anecdotes sit outside this release. The Athens selection itself remains the four works named above.
