Marfin Case: Lawyer of 46-Year-Old Accused Denounces Breach of Personal Data and Presumption of Innocence
by Bill Giannopoulos · Greek City TimesThe lawyer representing the 46-year-old woman accused in the 2010 Marfin Bank arson case has strongly criticised the publication of her personal data and photographs, describing it as a violation of her privacy and the presumption of innocence.
Kostas Papadakis, who will join the legal team defending the suspect upon her extradition from Britain, issued a detailed statement addressing the issue.
The 46-year-old, who has consistently maintained her innocence and offered to return to Greece voluntarily, is expected to be extradited soon. Until then, her lawyer noted he does not yet have access to the full case file.
Strong Criticism of Media Coverage
In his statement, Mr Papadakis condemned the widespread publication of names and photographs involving the accused and individuals in her close environment, stressing that no prosecutorial order has been issued permitting such disclosures.
“This practice is illegal,” he stated, adding that it violates the personal data and presumption of innocence of the accused, as well as the rights of others connected to her. He also highlighted that the suspect is the mother of a four-year-old child.
The lawyer expressed disappointment that no competent authorities or independent institutions have intervened to stop the practice. He criticised government figures for making public comments on a case they should not be discussing.
Mr Papadakis announced that one of his first priorities will be to address these violations through all available legal means to protect his client’s rights and restore the truth.
He concluded by urging all media outlets and relevant bodies not to reproduce or publish such material, asking them to verify sources and avoid contributing to “the internet underworld and all kinds of slanderers.”
