One person was in custody after six people were shot and killed in northeastern Mississippi, local authorities said.

“Unfortunately tonight we have dealt with tragedy in our community,” Sheriff Eddie Scott of Clay County said in a social media post early Saturday, adding that there were “multiple innocent lives lost due to violence.”

Sheriff Scott said that someone had been taken into custody and “no longer poses a threat to our community.” The circumstances of how and where the shootings occurred, as well as a possible motive, and the name of the person in custody, were not immediately released by authorities. Sheriff Scott said he expected to release more details on Saturday afternoon.

“I ask that you lift our victims and their families in your prayers,” Sheriff Scott wrote. “Law Enforcement is busy investigating and will release an update as soon as possible.”

This is a developing story. Please check back for more details.
