Hundreds enjoy sunrise New Year's Day Parkrun on the picturesque North East coast

A bright New Year's Day saw hundreds of eager runners brave cold weather to shake off any festive cobwebs by taking on the Whitley Bay Parkrun as the sun rose. The event, along the Links in the coastal town, saw hundreds brave an icy morning.

The picturesque 5k run sees participants run along the seafront and drop down to the promenade next to the iconic Rendezvous Café. The event is always popular - never more so than during the festive season when the chance to run off some indulgent days comes in handy.

Throughout the year, the free event runs at 9am, with the startline near the war memorial at Spanish City. Other events take place around the region, from Jesmond Dene and the Town Moor to South Shields.
