The 'one-of-a-kind' Whitley Bay restaurant where diners can make their own 'weird and wonderful' creations
by Catherine Addison-Swan · ChronicleLiveA hidden gem restaurant that offers up the "best pizza in Whitley Bay" according to stellar reviews from diners is hoping to welcome new customers through the door as it goes into its second year of business.
Pizza Rebels on Park Avenue recently celebrated its first birthday, having opened in September last year after owners Will Smith and Dan Hattrick set out to bring a unique food venue to their home town. What sets Pizza Rebels aside from the rest is that diners can build their own pizzas from scratch - choosing their own base, sauce, cheese and toppings, with no limits no matter how traditional or how wacky you want to go.
"The world is your oyster - if you're a pizza fan, we can do whatever you want," Will said. "Some people get every single topping on, while others just get sweetcorn. We've had some weird and wonderful creations, put it that way!"
The pair are builders by trade, and were renovating the Jam Jar Cinema back in 2019 when they first came up with the idea of opening their own pizza place downstairs. Fast forward to today, and whether you want to stop by the industrial-style restaurant after a trip to the cinema or take a freshly made hot pizza home to enjoy, Pizza Rebels is ideal for all ages and appetites.
"It's very family-friendly," Dan said of the venue. "You pay at the front, you're in and out, there's no time scale, and you can be as loud and as messy as you want!"
And for the grown-ups, the venue has recently launched 'Pingo' nights, with a £20 ticket including any pizza and two bingo games. The next Pingo event will be held on November 15 from 7pm, with tickets available to book on the Pizza Rebels website.
Among the toppings to choose from include favourites such as pepperoni, bacon and chorizo, while there's a gluten free pizza base and plenty of vegan options too. For indecisive diners, there are pre-built signature options on offer - from The King Kiev to the Wye Aye Ham - as well as a selection of desserts including a mouth-watering chocolate pizza topped with marshmallows and Smarties.
Pizza Rebels is also available for delivery to addresses along the North Tyneside coast via Uber Eats and Deliveroo - where it has earned dozens of rave reviews from customers. One person who ordered this month wrote: "Absolutely gorgeous. Very tasty, ultra-thin base pizza. Full of flavour and hot on arrival. Perfect."
Another diner praised: "Best pizza I've had yet. No grease and it was super tasty and affordable. Highly recommend."
A third reviewer raved: "Outstanding. Will never order from another pizza place."
And someone else declared: "Superb, delicious pizzas. Best pizza in Whitley Bay in my opinion!"
Pizza Rebels can be found at 16 Park Avenue under the Jam Jar Cinema, and is open from 4pm to 9pm Thursday to Saturdays and 4pm to 8pm on Sundays.
