by David Huntley · ChronicleLiveThousands of runners of all ages and abilities descended on Newcastle on Sunday to take part in the Great North 10k. This year's course took runners through Newcastle University campus, along Northumberland Street, past the Great North Museum, Grey's Monument, Old Eldon Square and across the Tyne Bridge, before returning to a finish on Great North Road and celebrations in the Event Village on the Town Moor.
A massive 13,000 runners took part in the hugely popular run, with Joseph Wilson coming in first place in a time of 00:31:16. Kate Maltby was the first woman over the line in a time of 00:34:39.
Sir Brendan Foster, Founder & President of the Great Run Company, said: "What an incredible day for Newcastle and for everyone who took part. Seeing a record 13,000 runners crossing the start line shows just how passionate people are about running in the North East. It's a real community event that brings people together.
"The atmosphere throughout the city has been outstanding. From the volunteers and spectators to the charities, entertainers and partners who make the event possible, it's been a fantastic celebration of everything that makes this region so special."
