The tribute comes after Joel wrapped up his history-making residency at the venue earlier this year

Vampire Weekend have performed a cover of Billy Joel‘s ‘Scenes From An Italian Restaurant’ while at Madison Square Garden – check out fan-shot footage of the performance below.

This past weekend (October 5), Vampire Weekend played the first of their two dates at the iconic New York venue, where they paid homage to Billy Joel, who in July wrapped up his history residency at Madison Square Garden that spanned 150 shows.

While Vampire Weekend have played a selection of covers during their encore set during their ongoing tour, the band made sure to differentiate the Joel honouring from their other covers, playing it during their main set.

The two MSG concerts come after the band played a surprise pop-up show outside a bar on the streets of New York on October 3.

Vampire Weekend’s latest album ‘Only God Was Above Us’ scored a four-star review from Laura Molloy, who wrote for NME: “Despite its sentimental homages to the history of their hometown, ‘Only God Was Above Us’ isn’t a nostalgic album. Rather than adopting an overly rose tinted view of the past to cope with the present, Koenig seems to be fine with embracing that things just aren’t that great.”
