The song that plays during the end credits of horror hit Backrooms has been revealed to be from the new album by Scottish electronic duo Boards Of Canada.

The A24 movie, about a psychiatrist searching for her client through a series of parallel dimensions known as “the Backrooms”, has been an enormous hit, scoring the studio’s biggest weekend with $81.4million (£60.4million) in the US and $117.9 million (£87.5million) worldwide.

Now, it’s emerged that the haunting track that plays over director Kane Parsons’ film comes from Boards Of Canada’s new album, ‘Inferno’.

Released on the same day as the movie, it’s the duo’s first release since 2013’s ‘Tomorrow’s Harvest’. The track used by Backrooms is ‘The Word Becomes Flesh’, a haunting track that fits with the ominous themes of the movie. Listen to it in full below.

Parsons spoke to GQ recently about the influences for the film, and name-checked the band as one of the inspirations for the score. Elsewhere, he also spoke about drawing heavily from video game Portal, saying that he frequently has dreams where he is in the game.

NME’s four-star review of the film concluded: “Backrooms’ vibes-based momentum won’t be to everyone’s taste. For some there’ll be too much explanation and for others, too little. But it’s an intriguing, memorable creation with the power to rattle, as Parsons lurks in the intersection between dread and delirium. Well worth exploring.”

Plans are already in place for a sequel to the film, while the 20-year-old director has spoken out about claims the film was “ghost directed”.

The movie’s success comes alongside fellow A24 horror Obsession, continuing a revolution in the genre that began last year with box office hits like Sinners, Weapons, and The Conjuring: Last Rites. Recently, Obsession director Curry Barker discussed a plot hole in the movie that he admits “doesn’t make any sense”, as well as discussing plans for a potential franchise.
