Review: The Quireboys bring the party to Bridgwater
by Anita Merritt · DevonLiveRock band The Quireboys surprisingly chose Bridgwater venue The Palace to bring their energetic show to fans in the Westcountry. Energetic and charismatic lead singer Spike was the perfect entertainer and proved to be a character you'll never forget.
His gravelly voice, which instantly reminds you of Rod Stewart, incredibly belted out hit after hit, starting with the instantly catchy Jeeze Louis. Backed by an amazing band, including Luke Morley from Thunder, the Saturday night party within the nightclub venue just got better and better.
The set list included Sweet Mary Ann, Raining Whiskey, Hey You and There She Goes Again. One of the most enthusiastic responses from the crowd came when they played 7 O'Clock which created a surge of dancing and singing.
Poignant moments came when Spike paid tribute to co-founder and guitarist Guy Bailey, who passed away last year, with credit given to some of the great songs they penned together.
For the encore they returned to the stage to play Like It or Not and then ended the evening with the heart wrenching I Don't Love You Anymore. Despite having been a fan of The Quireboys for many years, this was the first chance I had to see them live and they certainly didn't disappoint.
What sets The Quireboys apart from other rock bands is their creative blend of rock mashed up with old school rock 'n' roll and blues. It's impossible not to listen to them without jigging and signing along with a big smile on your face from just watching Spike and his antics.
He can even be forgiven for not remembering at one point what song was coming up next because he could have sung anything and it would have sounded fantastic. The band share an incredible raport and it felt a privilege to watch the musical geniuses at work.
