As the temperatures continue to drop and the clocks are set to turn back, tourists have the option to chase some winter sunshine abroad or opt for a snug autumnal staycation within the UK.

Northumberland, which holds the title as England's northernmost county, boasts several favoured staycation destinations such as the tranquil village of Corbridge and Bamburgh, heralded as the UK's "best seaside resort".

Another gem in Northumberland waiting to be explored is Alnwick, described as a "fairytale" market town, perfect as a home base for venturing throughout Northumberland.

With a history that dates back to the 7th century, Alnwick prospered from its origins as a traditional market town strategically located on the Great North Road during the 18th and 19th centuries. The construction of the majestic Alnwick Castle, which majestically stands above the River Aln, played a significant role in the towns flourishing.

In response to Scottish incursions, the town was fortified with tall walls featuring four gateways, two of which endure to this day. One of these, the Pottergate Tower, has been converted into a luxury holiday let, offering guests a unique view over the castle, reports the Mirror.

Alnwick Castle might strike a chord with Harry Potter enthusiasts as they may recognise it from its role in the movies, serving as one of the main settings for the Philosopher's Stone and the Chamber of Secrets.

Harry and his schoolmates honed their broomstick flying skills on the Outer Bailey, which also served as Harry's training ground for becoming a Quidditch player. As you wander around the castle's courtyards and baileys, you'll recognise them as the backdrop for numerous scenes featuring Harry, Ron, and Hermione en route to class, Hagrid's hut, and the Forbidden Forest.

Another standout feature of the town is Alnwick Gardens, a modern garden boasting everything from water features and a bamboo maze to treetop walkways and a separate garden teeming with deadly plants.

The world's largest treehouse also calls this place home. The Treehouse, a 6,000sqft structure, doubles as a unique restaurant and wedding venue, complete with rope bridges, fairy lights, and handcrafted furniture.
