Instow celebrates RNLI’s 200th anniversary in art

Over 80 artists showcased their talents at the 2024 RNLI Art Show recently.

The North Devon Yacht Club at Instow hosted the event with over 200 original pieces of art with the theme “Tide and Time” to celebrate the RNLI’s 200th anniversary.

Wendy Harrison, one of the organisers said: “It was a wonderful opportunity to support both local artists and RNLI Appledore.

“Originally created by Ian Hudson, a renowned watercolour artist, and friends, the RNLI Art Show has been held for over 30 years. Re-launched last year by Instow artists Wendy Harrison and Lee Holman, the Art show this year took over £20,000 in sales, generating £7,500 for Appledore Lifeboat and the RNLI.

“2024 is an important year for the RNLI as it celebrates its 200th year of saving lives. Their first hundred years saw them evolve lifeboats from oar and sail-powered vessels to the first motor rescue craft. During their second century, those lifeboats developed almost beyond recognition, and they added lifeguards, water safety and international projects to their lifesaving work. They’re saving more people, in more ways, in more places – and they’re counting on the public’s support and donations to continue their important work.”

Artists from Devon and Cornwall have celebrated this milestone anniversary by creating original art with the theme “Time and Tide”.

Wendy who jointly curated the show with Lee Holman, added: “To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the RNLI, our theme is inspired by time… capturing a moment; the changing weather and seasons; the movement of the tides and rivers… it is open to each artist’s personal interpretation.”
