Regardless, she and husband Jeff are the sponsors and honorary co-chairs of this year's Met Gala — a move that has been met with ample criticism in and of itself. Anna Wintour defended Lauren's inclusion, saying, “We’re very grateful for her incredible generosity. She's a great lover of costume and, obviously, of fashion."

So, what did Lauren wear for the "Fashion is Art" dress code? As it turns out, Schiaparelli by Daniel Roseberry.

The look is actually a reference to the painting Portrait of Madame X by John Singer Sargent, which is on display at the Met.

It was originally painted with one of the straps hanging off the subject's shoulder, but, as the museum notes, "the portrait received more ridicule than praise" upon its debut. Amid the scandal, the straps were repainted.
