An athlete who competed at HYROX Beijing is under internet fire for finishing the competition after leaking explosive diarrhea all over her body and the course.
HYROX, the latest workout fad, is an international indoor fitness race that combines running with functional workout stations. Competitors run one kilometer, complete one of eight strength training stations (i.e., rowing or sandbag lunges), and finish all eight circuits. Competitions are held at convention centers with 3,000–5,000 competitors, plus spectators.
The Sept. 12 HYROX competition was held in Beijing, China. Joanna Wietrzyk, the women's HYROX world record holder from Australia, was in the middle of her race when she suffered severe bowel incontinence.
Instead of momentarily stepping off the course or exiting the race entirely, Wietrzyk completed all eight circuits and finished in first place.
Unsurprisingly, photos from the event spread like wildfire, sparking an important online conversation about etiquette, hygiene, and HYROX rules.
According to the official HYROX rulebook, "spitting or clearing of nostrils onto the floor is strictly prohibited," which results in a two-minute penalty.
Many people are arguing that leaving feces all over the floor should have been grounds for penalties, if not immediate disqualification.
Others are pointing out that allowing Wietrzyk to continue competing was a biohazard and threatened the health and safety of fellow competitors and spectators.
