The 51-year-old pretty much stopped acting after The Big Bang Theory ended and has largely kept himself out of the public eye. Since then, he quietly welcomed two children and married a woman named Morgan.

“I never felt like much of an Angeleno,” Johnny said of leaving Hollywood for Nashville in a rare 2024 interview. “And I did try. I say that with sadness, not with snobbery. Thirty years is just a very long time to live in a city that you’re not all that comfortable in.”

Now, Johnny will be portraying playwright Tennessee Williams in a Chicago production of Kowalski, which previously ran off-Broadway and has been vying for a Broadway run. It's written by Gregg Ostrin and directed by theater and Modern Family actor Colin Hanlon.

In a statement, Johnny said of his return to acting, “The planets aligned. Gregg’s writing, Colin’s vision, and the feeling that after seven years of quietly observing life, I finally had something new to bring back to the work."
